The rose blooms In the month of May My soul darkens Suffering from love

Bilbilicos sing They sigh in love And passion kills me Much my pain

Come more quickly, dove , More quickly come to me Faster you, my soul , That I'm going to die.

SONG ORDER, with NOTES - not at all final, but an approximation

Vakht Oyf
as we currently sing it
Bella Ciao ;(melody is fine, some will know the harmonies)
order: English, Italian, nign once all parts, Yiddish, nign 3x (SA, SAT, SATB), English
Vilne
SINGING ONLY refrain, verse 1 (everyone who knows it), refrain again; I will do it a bit less slow and with more regular tempo than Derek
Turn Turn Turn
see lyric sheet for scanning clues
Abi Gezint ;(the fussiest of these tunes, we’ll only do it if we have enough veterans to help carry it off)
If we do it, the final sung words not in the score (M60-61): TENORS & BASSES: “your spirits will be falling;” SOPRANOS & ALTOS: “if money’s got you crawling;” TUTTI: “the best in life is there for free!”
Der Yokh ;
order: verse 1: Lilye & Ed, verse 2: Tim & Ruby, verse 3: all past minis; everybody on refrain; see lyric sheet for verses
Peace Canon
as we currently sing it
Mai Lid
for ease, more consistent tempo than with Derek
Yugnt Himn
as we currently sing it, but more march-like, a bit less hectic; see lyric sheet for verses
If I Had a Hammer
see lyric sheet
Ale Brider
using recent lyrics: brider/shvester, freylekh/pleytim; see lyric sheet

Musescore

Musescore is an open source program that runs on PC's and Macs and does many of the things programs like Finale do for free. Once a score is in its format you can listen to it (midi). It gives you a way to loop over a difficult section or measure. You change the volume, mute or solo the soprano, alto tenor and bass parts. You can also change the tempo. You can just show or print just your part. It is great for the early stages of learning a new piece.

I have scanned and then corrected most of the scanning errors for Kum Aroys, Mayn Harts, and some of Arbeter Froyen and Dumai.

How to

  1. download and install the software to run on your laptop. It needs to be version 3, not 4. Here are links:
  2. download to the chorus songs in .mcsz (musescore) format. Put them in some convenient directory. To download right_click on the links below and save_link_as
  3. run musescore and file/open one or more of the pieces.
  4. Get familiar with the basic commands you will need.
    • There is a play/rewind/loop/metronome menu on top. Try the play and rewind.
    • open the view/play panel. This is a better set of play controls that adds tempo control. Try it.
    • open the view/mixer panel. Uncheck play_part_only if it is checked. Now you should see a master volume and separate voume controls for each part as well as buttons to solo or mute each part
    • You can move and change the size of these panels and change the size of the score or how it appears.

Have fun or at least try not to get to frustrated. You can always call me(Tim) at (857)498-2574. Feel free to ask me to scan and process other pieces/parts. If the powers that be would export the finale files in musicxml format, it would be so much easier.

If we get other new songs and I scan/correct them I will put them on this site. There is some other stuff there like versions where I added a English lyrics.

I find it hard to practice new songs. My music reading ability is shady and between the rhythms and the melodies, picking out the notes on a keyboard to sing along is not effortless. It helps me to sing along with the score. I ping my fellow basses thinking it might be useful for more than me.

I have imported a few of pieces into the Musescore1 format and then recorded mp4's using OBS Studio2. Now that I have figured out how to do this let me know if you want me to work on another section or part or piece. I am happy to do it. -Tim

1: Musescore.org
Musescore is an open source program that runs on PC's and Macs and does many of the things programs like Finale do for free. Once a score is in its format, it gives you a way to loop over a section, show just your part, change the volume of the parts add a click track and lots of other stuff.
I would recommend using the above program instead of the mp4's that are on this site. You can download the musescore files from here and then play them using the PC/MAC program.
When I am starting with a new piece I sing along with the bass part and mute all the others. I know I have progressed if I can mute the bass part and keep on my part singing with sopranos, altos and tenors.
The ABV pieces were scanned from the pdf's into .mscz format and then I (mostly) hand corrected and manually entered the lyrics. (It would be great if the finale pro files that produce ABV's pdfs were exported in MusicXML format, much easier)
There are mobile apps for ios and android but they require a subscription to be useful.
2 OBS Studio
is an open source app that allows you to create screencasts, podcasts and videos from what is playing on your screen (or other video and audio sources)

if you upload mp4's to the wiki you can just do this:

if you are connecting to you tube
