We will be in Mexico so it is possible texting won't work. Texting and emailing might be best.
general + food/towels/linens/paper
- living on a dirt road, we find leaving our shoes in the entry makes for a more clean and comfortable house.
- help yourself to any food or beer
- beds are made and there are towels on the bed. (Nancy Lee, we will leave a set of clean sheets and a towel in the downstairs bedroom)
- extra linens/towels are in the 2nd floor hall closet
- paper towels/toilet paper in the back hall
heat
Heat is controlled from a web browser. The first floor will be set at 68 while you are here
A few times a winter the device that controls the heat can get confused by power interruption or dropped wifi. It then needs to be reset. The device is in the cabinet in the bedroom off the kitchen. On the lower portion there is a row of switches. One of them is marked heat reset. Turn it off, count to 10 then turn it back on. After 5 minutes repeat the procedure. That should take care of it.
If you want to use the upstairs rooms (they will be set at 58) or if you want to change the first floor temperature in the music, living, tv or guest room, you can text me and I will change it. Or you can boot up the laptop in the kitchen, log in as guest, open the Microsoft Edge browser and control the app yourself.
WIFI
- Wifi SSID is street_no_vale2 or street_no_vale5 or uli_fence(porch and yard) and the passwords for all is jjjjjjjj (8js)
tv/stereo
- TV
- Fios remote is on top of the TV. tv-input is the bottom left button. FIOS is HDMI1-cable input and chromecast is HDMI2-DVD input.
- stereo
- For the stereo please turn down the volume before switching anything, some inputs are way louder than others. Output A is living room speakers, B is bathroom speakers, the black amp below that controls kitchen and tvroom speakers. It has a chromecast audio connected to the AUX input.
garbage/recycling
- There are recycling bins behind the doors to the right of the refrigerator. There is a compost bin out the back door toward the high stone wall. Trash bags are under the sink. Our trash cans are by the boat.
- Trash and recycling (if they are getting full) get put out Monday evening for Tuesday pickup. You can dump the small bue bins into the left big blue recycle bin and roll it down.
parking
- The driveway should be kept clear. Up back, the left spot is for John and Sue. You can park to the right. Down below it doesn't matter.
kitchen
- Please don't set any raw meat packaging on the butcher block. We use it for chopping, the right side is the only place we chop garlic and onions.
- We don't usually leave wooden utensils or chopping knives in the dishwasher or soaking in the sink
- The coffee grinder is set up to grind right into the expresso cofee holder. One press wakes it up, the next start it grinding, the next stops grinding. There is a coffe cone somewhere in the second draw near the fridge and filters in the top right drawer there if you prefer drip. But we usually just heat a little milk in the microwave for 30 sec, grid the beans into the expresso container, tamp them a little then put the cup under the expresso machine..
- The coffee machine turns on with the left button and is ready to brew when all the buttons light. Once it is ready the right button will make about 10 oz of coffee and the button to the left of that will make ~5oz. Usually we heat up the cup with some milk for 30 seconds in the microwave before. When it runs out of water the container can be removed by lifting it straight up from the back.
tasks
plants/garden
- If the house plants look particularly unhappy please give them a drink. For the ferns over the dog house, there is a mister that they love.
dog/cat
- Ulysses(Uli) has some friends who sometimes come to the door and ask him to go out and play in the yard. That's cool. They bring him back.
- When you are home the dog door can be open. Uli will go out and lie the porch (even when it is 10 degrees out!) or hang out in the yard and out front and come back in at will. We call him in from the porch and close the dog door at night. He has an led collar which is charging under the cookbook area of the kitchen. Uli is not allowed on any furniture and is discouraged from being in the kitchen while we cook lest he resort to begging. Mabibi is allowed in and out during the day but we try to keep her in once it gets dark. We close the door early on Monday evening and leave it closed Tuesday morning as that is trash day and we want to discourage him from sniffing around.
- Even though he is free to hang in the yard, Uli still needs 2 walks a day. He has been trained not to "shit where he lives"
food (in the back hallway to the right)
- Uli: twice a day, one scoop dry dogfood and fresh water
- Mabibi: twice a day, 1/2 can (cover or saran wrap and refrigerate remainder) or a scoop of dry food. She will drink from Uli's water.
walking Uli
- On the dirt road Uli is usually off leash. On paved streets/sidewalks he can be on a leash. Sometimes he will test a new person by wanting to pull them. A flick of the leash while saying "Don't Pull" should work. If he obsesses on wanting to smelll some dogs butt or something, the hierarchy of discipline commands is "Good Dog, Walk with me", "Uli Stop/Don't Pull", "Uli Sit", "Uli Stay", and then if he still is obsessing... "Uli No", and finally "Bad Dog". If we are paying attention then we see the next dog coming before he does and can keep his attention. Generally, we let him explore/sniff/pee/visit_other_dogs where the sidewalks aren't crowded but once we get to the commercial areas of Center Street we tell him "Uli No Sniffing, No peeing, Walk with me" and have him walk along your right side. Uli loves Jamaica Pond.
