Peri Levin McKenna sent a message Apr 5, 2015 Hi Scott, We are very excited to have found such a perfect home for our family gathering. Tim and I were going to send the contract back to you tonight when I realized that I neglected to ask you about our wonderful dog. He is extremely well behaved and is not a barker. Ulysses is a labra-doodle, does not shed and is non-allergen producing. Being at the beach after labor day and having him with us would be heavenly. If you still have concerns Ulysses would be content to stay on the porch... Regards, Peri

Hi Peri,

Sounds like a great dog and I understand you want to be with him for the week and keep him comfortable. I will let you bring him to the house - I do have to think about increasing the security. But please do me a favor and make sure he does not do any damage. The leather couches are new and I have had one dog in the past that did scratch up the trim and doors. Thanks, Scott

Adam on Fire Island

Ocean Beach is definitely the most populous town on Fire Island. On the good side they have by far (5:1 compared to any of the other towns) the most restaurants and bars/live music spots. Every town (for the most part) has a convenience store/deli and a liquor store but Ocean Beach actually has a decent town set up with shops, etc.. On the negative side it is one of the more popular weekend spots for the young party crowd. They come in waves via the ferries for the evening (Friday and Saturday) and all leave by 1am on the last ferry home. Easy enough to avoid the two or three spots they go for the night and head to the smaller live music spots and the crowds will be far less in September. Also, with Ocean Beach, they are pretty restrictive on beach beverages. Pretty sure it is water bottles only and they love open container tickets. Ocean Beach is by far the most popular and fun town for a Fire Island vacation for good reason but it has its downsides. Also, no real spot there to anchor your boat. You can anchor it in a nice secluded cove with public bay side beach access about a 10-15 minute walk down the beach west (or via small dirt roads/paths if you follow the google earth aerial view when walking or know the way) or through the paths east at Atlantique or Ocean Bay Park, respectively. I anchor there often with the sailboat. Both spots you can get pretty close but Atlantique has the added advantage of being a little more protected and a nice shallow shelf to anchor on with a whaler. Ocean Beach is just on the shy side of a 30 minute walk to the wedding venue in Kismet (all towns can be accessed by water taxi if too tired to walk...for a price of course). If you are heading over there via the whaler, there are plenty of spots to anchor right at Kismet as well.

While Ocean Beach may get some crowds in the Town on the weekend (and much less so in September), it won't be crowded otherwise and offers the most variety in terms of food, nightlife, etc. It is nicknamed "The Town of No" because they will ticket for any quality of life offense (open container, public urination, etc.). They do this mostly to keep the younger folks in line and mostly from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day weekend (after which there are less crowds, cops, etc.) but it is something to keep in the back of your mind while staying there.

Kismet or Saltaire would likely be too secluded for the full week (Atlantique is a marina/anchorage only but they have a nice little public bath facility if the boat is over there). Ocean Bay Park, nicknamed "The Town of Yes", is also a good option as it is right next door to Ocean Beach (5-10 minute walk), allows drinking on the beach (small wooden post line demarcates Ocean Beach and Ocean Bay Par Beach), has a few spots nightlifewise with direct access to the greater options at Ocean Beach. You can anchor your boat off the beach there on the bay side with a short swim in to either Flynn's dock or Schooner's Inn (both places fun to hang out at with Live Music and whatnot although the food at Flynn's is absolutely terrible). Schooners is a nice spot with a back deck/beach on the bay side you can hang at. We have stayed in Ocean Bay Park a few times. To the direct east of Ocean Bay Park is Point of Woods (private, small village) but right past that is Sunken Forest National Park (really cool spot with an odd fresh water effect), Eric and Sean have been there a few times as well) then Cherry Grove and The Pines (fire Island's premier gay and lesbian communities. Something not to be missed (especially the Pines) as they have a fantastic nightlife as well as some of the most amazing and intricately designed homes on the Island).

By Whaler, from Kismet (the West) (also, great fishing right there by the Robert Moses bridges) to the Pines in the East (past that East is Davis park and some more National parkspace you can check out but more exploration than destination) you are looking at a 10-20 minute boat ride end to end, or an hour to an hour and a half walk.

Bottom line: Ocean Beach or Ocean Bay Park are your best options unless you want fully off the beaten path but Ocean Bay Park is somewhat the best of both worlds. If you need any more info let me know! Getting really excited!
