A flick of the leash while saying "Don't Pull" should work. Lots of other dogs/people know him, but if you see a human holding a leash tightly I will tell Uli: "They don't want to play. Keep walking". Generally, we let him explore/sniff/pee/visit_other_dogs where the sidewalks aren't crowded but once we get to the commercial areas of Center Street we tell him "Uli No sniffing, no peeing, no visiting. Walk with me, good dog", having him walk along your right side.

general + food/towels/linens/paper

  • living on a dirt road, we find leaving our shoes in the entry makes for a more clean and comfortable house.
  • Help yourself to any food or drink
  • the first floor bed is made and there are towels on the bed
  • extra linens/towels are in the 2nd floor hall closet
  • paper towels/toilet paper in the back hall
  • we usually use placemats on the dining room table. They are in the drawers under the little sink. Dirty placemats and dishtowels can go in the hamper in the bathroom.
  • there is a washing machine and dryer on the second floor. There is a clothes line outside on the second floor back porch
  • If you want to have a barbecue, there is charcoal in the back hall and a chimney that starts with paper by the grill. We share the grill with John and Sue It is in the yard near the pond

WIFI

Wifi SSID is street_no_vale2 or street_no_vale5 and the passwords for both is jjjjjjjj (8js)

tv/stereo

TV is Verizon Fios, one of the black remotes. You can access our Netflix and Prime accounts by the Chromecast grey remote. You can get to it by pressing the a/v(tv input) button to (5)HDMI2. You can find it on your phone/laptop as 'Tv TV'. You just need to be on the wifi. Fios runs on a/v(tv input) (4) HDMI1. If you turn on the TV with the chromecast remote, it will automatically switch to HDMI2
For the stereo please turn down the volume before switching anything, some inputs are way louder than others. Output A is living room speakers, B is bathroom speakers, the black amp below that controls kitchen and tvroom speakers. The second floor TV also has a black remote with a netflix button and it has a chromecast on one of the inputs.

AC

The best way to keep the house comfortable in summer is to open the windows on the first floor and the stair up the the second floor in the evening when it cools below 76 degrees. Then in the morning, sometime before the sun hits the front porch, close the first floor and stair windows, turn on the AC (76 EnergySaver), turn on the TV room fan and the floor fan as needed.
There is also AC in the study on the second floor. You are welcome to use the study.
The fan and light in the TV room runs from a little remote hanging on the wall on the right side as you are leaving the room. Its a little flaky but it works. (the left electric switch on the window wall needs to be up.)

robo vac

Ulysses and the cat shed like crazy and track in dirt form the road. The Robo vacuum is set up to vacuum the kitchen, living room and tv room every day a 6:30AM. If it is inconvenient or annoying or gets stuck, press home button and it will go away.

garbage/recycling

There are recycling bins behind the doors to the right of the refrigerator. There is a compost bin out the back door toward the high stone wall.

parking

The driveway should be kept clear. Up back, the left spot is for John and Sue. You can park to the right. You can park down below in the basketbll court or on the street.

kitchen

Please don't set any raw meat packaging on the butcher block. We use it for chopping, the right side is the only place we chop garlic and onions.
We don't usually leave wooden utensils or chopping knives in the dishwasher or soaking in the sink
The coffee grinder is set up to grind right into the expresso coffee holder. One press wakes it up, the next start it grinding, the next stops grinding. There is a coffee cone somewhere in the second draw near the fridge and filters in the top right drawer there. But we usually just heat a little milk in the microwave for 30 sec, grind the beans into the expresso container, tamp them a little then put the cup under the expresso machine.
The coffee machine turns on with the left button and is ready to brew when the buttons light. The far right button just about fills a cup, the 3rd button is a double shot. When it runs out of water the container can be removed by lifting straight up. We clean the filter into the compost after brewing a cup then rinse it.
There is also a stove-top expresso maker in the cabinet to right of and below the coffee machine

tasks

plants

If any of the plants look particularly unhappy please give them a drink.

Mabibi

Outdoor Time

Mabibi has been indoor‑outdoor her whole life but is older now and does not stay out long. She will stand by the kitchen door when she wants to go outside. Only let her out if: It is well before dusk, and You will be around and attentive to let her back in. Often she only wants to be out for a few minutes, so check the door frequently once she’s out.

Food and Water

Normal schedule:

Morning: 1/2 packet wet food + insulin. Evening: 1/2 packet wet food + insulin. Dry food: 1/2 cup total per day (you can split it between morning and evening or give as otherwise specified).

If you are unable to give insulin at a scheduled time: Do not give wet food. Instead, give an extra 1/2 scoop of dry food.

Wet food & water:

The open packet of wet food should be stored in a Tupperware container in the fridge. In the evening, adding a bit of hot water helps get the food out and makes it easier for her to eat.
There are two large silver water bowls. Keep them filled with fresh water at all times. Be sure to top them off before bed; if the bowls are low or empty at night, Mabibi may wake you to get more water.

Insulin

There is a video with detailed instructions on how to give insulin; please watch it carefully before giving shots.

Ulysses

food

Uli: twice a day, one scoop dry dogfood (in the back hall) and fresh water

walking Uli

Uli needs to be walked in the morning and late afternoon
On the dirt road Uli is usually off leash. On paved streets/sidewalks he can be on a leash. Sometimes he will test a new person by wanting to pull them. A flick of the leash while saying "Don't Pull" should work. The hierarchy of discipline commands is "Good Dog, Walk with me", "Uli Stop/Don't Pull", "Uli Sit", "Uli Stay", and then if he still is obsessing... "Uli No", and finally "Bad Dog". Walk with me, good dog".

at home

Uli will be fine if he is kept in the house between walks. But...
When you are home during the day the dog door can be open. We close it at night. Uli will then go out on the porch or in the yard and come back in at will.
When we go out we say "We are going to go and you are going to stay. Good Dog."
Uli has dog-beds all over the house and is not invited onto furniture. He is discouraged from being in the kitchen while we cook lest he resort to begging. With us he hopefully sits by the table while we eat. Let him know "Nothing for you, lie down". If he persists: "Go lie down in your spot"
Uli reacts to sounds outside, especially at night (turkeys, coyotes, strange things) and will bark a little. If you are nearby just say "OK, OK enough already" He usually stops before becoming obnoxious.
