general + food/towels/linens/paper
- living on a dirt road, we find leaving our shoes in the entry makes for a more clean and comfortable house.
- help yourself to any food or drink
- the first floor bed is made and there are towels on the bed, but you can sleep anywhere.
- extra linens/towels are in the 2nd floor hall closet
- paper towels/toilet paper in the back hall
- we usually use placemats on the dining room table. They are in the drawers under the little sink. Dirty placemats and dishtowels can go in the hamper in the bathroom.
- there is a washing machine on the second floor. There is a clothes line outside on the second floor back porch
- there is charcoal in the back hall and a chimney that starts with paper by the grill. We share the grill with John and Sue It is in the yard near the pond
WIFI
- Wifi SSID is street_no_vale2 or street_no_vale5 or uli_fence(porch and yard) and the passwords for all is jjjjjjjj (8js)
tv/stereo
- TV is Verizon Fios, one of the black remotes. The only pay channel we currently get is Showtime but you can access our Netflix account by pressing the +(widgets) button. There is a chromecast connected. You can get to it by pressing the a/v(tv input) button to (5)HDMI2. You can find it on your phone/laptop as 'TVroom'. You just need to be on the wifi. Fios runs on a/v(tv input) (4) HDMI1
- For the stereo please turn down the volume before switching anything, some inputs are way louder than others. Output A is living room speakers, B is bathroom speakers, the black amp below that controls kitchen and tvroom speakers. The second floor TV also has a black remote with a netflix button and it has a chromecast on one of the inputs.
- The fan and light in the TVroom runs from a little remote hanging on the wall on the right side as you are leaving the room. Its a little flaky but it works. (the left electric switch on the window wall needs to be up.)
garbage/recycling
- There are recycling bins behind the doors to the right of the refrigerator. There is a compost bin out the back door toward the high stone wall.
- Trash and recycling get put out Monday evening for Tuesday pickup. You can dump the small bue bins into the big blue bin and roll it down.
parking
- The driveway should be kept clear. Up back, the left spot is for John and Sue. You can park to the right. Down below it doesn't matter.
kitchen
- Please don't set any raw meat packaging on the butcher block. We use it for chopping, the right side is the only place we chop garlic and onions.
- We don't usually leave wooden utensils or chopping knives in the dishwasher or soaking in the sink
- The coffee grinder is set up to grind right into the expresso cofee holder. One press wakes it up, the next start it grinding, the next stops grinding. There is a coffee cone somewhere in the second draw near the fridge and filters in the top right drawer there. But we usually just heat a little milk in the microwave for 30 sec, grind the beans into the exprosso container, tamp them a little then put the cup under the expresso machine.
- The coffee machine turns on with the left button and is ready to brew when the buttons light. When it runs out of water the container can be removed by lifting straight up.
- There is also a stove-top expresso maker in the cabinet to right of and below the coffee machine
tasks
plants/garden
- If the garden or plants look particularly unhappy please give them a drink. There are marijuana plants on the top floor porch that could us a drink almost every day. Please feel free to eat anything from the garden.
dog/cat
- Ulysses(Uli) has some friends who sometimes come to the door and ask him to go out and play in the yard. That's cool. They bring him back.
- When you are home the dog door can be open. Uli will then go out on the porch or in the yard and come back in at will. Uli is not allowed on any furniture and is discouraged from being in the kitchen while we cook lest he resort to begging. Mabibi is allowed in and out during the day but we try to keep her in once it gets dark.
food
- Uli: twice a day, one scoop dry dogfood and fresh water
- Mabibi: twice a day, 1 scoop of dry cat food.
walking Uli
- On the dirt road Uli is usually off leash. On paved streets/sidewalks he can be on a leash. Sometimes he will test a new person by wanting to pull them. A flick of the leash while saying "Don't Pull" should work. If he obsesses on wanting to smelll some dogs butt or something, the hierarchy of discipline commands is "Good Dog, Walk with me", "Uli Stop/Don't Pull", "Uli Sit", "Uli Stay", and then if he still is obsessing... "Uli No", and finally "Bad Dog". If we are paying attention then we see the next dog coming before he does and can keep his attention. Generally, we let him explore/sniff/pee/visit_other_dogs where the sidewalks aren't crowded but once we get to the commercial areas of Center Street we tell him "Uli No Sniffing, Walk with me" and have him walk along your right side. Uli loves Jamaica Pond and he loves swimming and fetching sticks thrown in the water (discourage him from eating the sticks). The park rangers will say something if they see him free. We usually walk left(south) from the boat house and once we get 1/4 of the way around we let him go to the water.
