first principles
- Positive current moves (the arrow points in the direction) from the higher potential (voltage) toward the lower potential (voltage).
- The end of the R/L/C that the current enters is always the positive end.
- Unless the device is acting as a short circuit there is always a drop in voltage from the positive side to the negative side. If you put a meter from the + side to the negative it will read a positive voltage.
- The voltage drop across a device is equal to the voltage on the '+' side minus the voltage on the '-' side
