TRANSLATION Men, plainly enough, all think it a feather in their cap if they make lov It is foolish of us women to speak ill of love: what is seen as praiseworthy for them is dishonourable for us and an inexcusable fault; morality is harsh. Nature has more sense than they do: it has given us a body better designed than men’s for amorous practices, yet to us they are more forbidden. Translation by Mick Swithinbank![]()
I Believe by Mark A. Miller
I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining. I believe in love even when I don’t feel it. I believe in God even when God is silent. Words scratched on the walls of a cellar in Cologne, Germany by a Jew hiding from Nazi persecution. *quote and primary source below from Research Article by EVERETT HOWE part V-* On June 26, 1945, the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Nachrichten published a “special correspondence” from an unnamed reporter writing from Cologne...The article is about Catholic resistance to the Nazis in Cologne. It speaks of the underground bomb shelters used by the Catholic community, and of disused underground passages in old buildings that the Catholic resistance used as refuges from the Gestapo. Here is the relevant section,..[translated] by Nicholas Kontje: "At one point, nine Jewish fugitives hid here for four months without ever being caught...The following inscription is written on the wall of one of these underground rooms, which in some ways resemble the Roman catacombs: “I believe in the sun, though it be dark; I believe in God, though He be silent; I believe in neighborly love, though it be unable to reveal itself.” ...Note that the reporter says that they have seen the underground shelter with their own eyes.

On piece by the flute choir is the Captain Kangaroo theme song Hi Singers, I found a youtube recording of Nous Voyons Que Les Hommes. The cognitive dissidence of seeing the words in English of a completely different song was too much for me. Also, the text was too small for my old eyes so I made a new version of the sheet music in French only with bigger text. I also found a translation of the French. What a cool "chancon". There is this open source program called Musescore 3 that I used to create the sheet music and playable score. There is a link to that score which has a mixer so you can change the balance between the parts. Thinking that someone else might find them useful, I put them all here: Nous Voyons Que Les Hommes -extra stuff
